Outdoor projector enclosures essential protection
Year round outdoor projector enclosures.
Electronics outdoors do not mix, this is why outdoor projector enclosures are becoming the norm when a projector is being deployed out in the open.
What protection does a projector enclosure offer?
These environmental enclosures provide a safe, secure environment for the projector and media player/small factor computer (that stores the advertising media). There are only a few manufacturers who offer such product and the prices vary widely as these are new products so sometimes they do command a premium! With one manufacturer offering a solution at $17,850, this is for the high end 4K digital projectors, but there are most affordable solutions out there.
The weather for any electronic item is a challenge, too much heat and the circuit boards overheat, too cold and condensation builds up, resulting in corroded circuit boards and this is what happens when inexperienced companies jump in and try to compete!
Then you have to look at the vandal/theft aspect as you are going to be leaving a high price tag item in an open area. Without security the projector will be stolen for sure, the best thing here, is to stay clear of any units that are locked with cam locks and/or compression locks, you can open these with a screwdriver with little effort. One manufacturer of outdoor projector enclosures, has over 23 years manufacturing experience, making outdoor housings, provides a solution that is secured with high security locks.
When are projector housings used?
After speaking to a group of audio visual engineers, the use of these protective projector cases is increasing fast, due to the development with projector technology and new models becoming outdated quickly resulting in a price drop. One engineer told us, “that 6 years ago, you saw everyone putting a flat panel TV outdoors, now it seems everyone is looking at projectors – the reason is clear you can use the side of your house as the viewing area rather than crowded round a flat panel TV.”
Now projectors are being installed in outdoor home cinemas and even outside bars and nightclubs with the owners using the building as a giant advert! The ads can be edited in seconds and new offers, events and guest DJ’s can be featured in the projector mapping.
Check list for outdoor projector enclosures.
Always check for the following, if the manufacture does not have a full set of ticks, think again if you use them! This could cost you the price of the projector!
- Does the steel housing have air filtration on the air inlets?
- Does the unit have thermostatic heating?
- Does the projector enclosure have thermostatic cooling?
- Is the viewing window vandal proof?
- Are high security locks fitted to the environmental enclosure?
- Are the outdoor projector enclosures earth bonded?
This is a basic check list, if there is no air filtration (ask what is fitted), bugs and insects can enter the housing and climb into the projector.
If the protective enclosure does not have a thermostatic cooling and heating system, the projector will last a very short time. The thermostats allow the engineer to set the temperature per location for local weather and can be controlled remotely on some products.
If the viewing window can be vandalized or the door forced open due to inferior locks, the projector is most likely to be stolen with costly un-necessary replacement costs.
